How I became a boudoir photographer

Photography has always been a part of my creative journey, but my path to
becoming a boudoir photographer was anything but linear. It was a combination of
artistic passion, life experiences, and a desire to empower women that led me to
where I am today.

The First Click: My Journey into Photography

My first memory of picking up a camera was when I was 19, back in 2009. At the
time, I was studying visual communication at university and was deep into my ‘artsy’
phase. It was during a holiday in Queenstown, New Zealand, that I experimented
with self-portraits using my small Canon DSLR. I also captured portraits of my
friends, drawn to the way light could transform an image.
However, it wasn’t until 2015, while living in the UK, that my passion for portrait
photography truly ignited. During a trip to the Lake District, I photographed loved
ones in the golden-hour light. That experience was a turning point—I became
obsessed with the way light interacted with my subjects and the magic that unfolded
in the frame.

From Branding to Boudoir

Before stepping into boudoir photography, I focused on personal branding
photography for small business owners, followed by family photography. Portraiture
has always been my main interest because I love people—their emotions,
expressions, and unique stories.

When a family friend asked me to do a boudoir shoot as a wedding gift for her
husband, I had never even heard of boudoir photography before. But the
experience intrigued me. I adored the delicate lace details, the artistry involved, and
the way these images helped women see themselves in a new light. A year later,
another woman approached me for a boudoir session while going through a divorce.
It was then that I realized there was a gap in the Sydney/NSW boudoir market. The
potential to create something different, something impactful, inspired me to take the
leap into specializing in boudoir.

The Emotional Power of Boudoir Photography

Looking for a boudoir photographer near me is not just about finding someone to
take beautiful pictures. It’s about empowerment, self-love, and confidence. Every
session is deeply personal, and I cherish the connections I build with my clients.
One session that stands out was with Chloe in 2021. She had been an active
member of our community and Facebook group for a long time, and she finally
booked a session to celebrate her transition journey. It was more than just a
photoshoot—it was a powerful moment of self-acceptance and joy. The energy in the

room that day, the emotions shared, and the overwhelming support from our
community made it an unforgettable experience.

How Boudoir Photography Inspires Me

Boudoir photography has transformed my own relationship with confidence and self-
image. Every woman who walks into my studio brings her own story, struggles, and
triumphs. Watching my clients embrace their bodies and celebrate their journey is
inspiring beyond words.

I’ve also found that our clients share a unique warmth and gratitude. They trust us
with their vulnerability, and in return, we pour our hearts into making them feel
incredible. It’s a space of mutual empowerment, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The Beauty of Studio Boudoir Photography

While we did an outdoor boudoir mini-session day in October 2023, the studio
remains my favourite setting for boudoir photography. The controlled lighting, privacy,
and ability to create the perfect ambiance make studio sessions the ideal choice for
capturing stunning, intimate portraits. Outdoor sessions come with challenges like
unpredictable weather and the need for very early morning shoots to catch the best
light, making them a bit more complicated to execute. In contrast, our studio offers a
comfortable, luxurious environment where clients can truly relax and embrace their
experience without any distractions.

A Day in My Life

When I’m not in the studio, you’ll find me on a walk, at Pilates, or at the
beach—especially Dee Why Beach, where I live. I’m also a single mum to my
incredible 5-year-old son, so a lot of my free time revolves around him. Balancing
business and motherhood is challenging, but it’s also deeply rewarding.

What Makes a Great Boudoir Shoot?

The right fabric can elevate a boudoir shoot. My personal favourites are French lace,
silk, satin, and tulle. These materials create a dreamy, sensual aesthetic that
translates beautifully on camera.

And when it comes to relaxation after a long day in the studio? I wish I could say I
unwind with a book and a glass of wine, but in reality, my time is split between work
and being a mum. However, when I do carve out moments for myself, I love long
walks and reformer Pilates (thanks to the encouragement of my associate
photographer, Sam!).

The Best Part of My Job

Without a doubt, the most fulfilling part of my work is seeing the transformation in my
clients. Many come in feeling nervous, unsure of how they’ll look on camera. But by

the end of the session, they radiate confidence. Watching someone see themselves
in a new light, sometimes for the first time in years, is an indescribable feeling.
I also love watching my team grow into their roles, becoming just as passionate
about uplifting our clients as I am. The energy in our studio is something special, and
I’m grateful for it every day.

Looking Ahead: Future Goals

I’m incredibly happy with where my business is now, but I’m always thinking about
growth. Over the next five years, I’d love to move our studio into a commercial space
to accommodate more clients and expand our team. We have been searching for the
perfect location, and I know that when the timing is right, we will find the ideal space
to take our business to the next level.

My journey to becoming a boudoir photographer has been shaped by creativity,
passion, and a love for helping women see their own beauty. What started as a
simple favour for a friend has turned into a career that fills my days with meaning
and joy.

If you’ve ever considered a boudoir shoot and are searching for a boudoir
photographer near me, I’d love to help you create a session that makes you feel
empowered, confident, and beautiful—just as you are.
